This policy is to limit the access to wild animal
habitats, wild plant habitats, wetlands, valleys, and
areas within national parks with important natural resources
that need to be protected from natural and man-made disasters.
What are the Special Protection Zones at National Parks?
-
The Rest-Year Sabbatical System was first implemented in 1991. Areas subject to the 6th Rest-Year, such as areas with endangered species that need to be protected, were added to the system.
-
The protected areas were reclassified and systemized to be designated the Special Protection Zones at National Parks (Effective from 2007).
Previous zones subject to the Rest-Year Sabbatical System,
Habitats for Near Extinct Species and other Areas that Need to be Protected.

Prohibit entry pursuant to Article 28 of the Natural Park Law (restricted access and others), and violators must pay a fine of 100,000 won pursuant to Article 86 of the same law.
Background and Necessity of Implementing the Law
-
The number of endangered species is decreasing worldwide. In the case of Korea,
- increasing number of people are visiting national parks after the entry fee was waived
- habitat management became more important due to the endangered species restoration project
- there is a need to protect important species, etc…
-
The 「Special Protection Zones at National Parks 」 were designated in order to ensure systematic and specialized management of habitats for endangered animals and plants within national parks through the classification and management of species by characteristics, because the internal and external conditions of national parks are changing.
Management of Special Protection Zones
- Start regular monitoring in order to study the changes in the habitats within the Special Protection Zones.
- Review the overall conditions after monitoring, and analyze the effects of annual review.
- Implement promotional activities such as the installation of information signs, protection facilities such as barriers, and websites.
- Prohibit entry pursuant to Article 28 (Entry Restriction and others) of the Natural Park Law, and impose a fine of 100,000 won according to Article 86 of the same law.
