An International Days refers to a period of time to observe some issue of international interest or concern such as International Mother Earth Day (22 April) and World Environment Day (5 June).

 

UN "World National Parks & Protected Areas Day" is just around the corner to be designated.

 

On the occasion of CBD COP12 in 2014, Republic of Korea proposed to declare 20 February as "World National Parks & Protected Areas Day" to UN General Assembly and CBD decision was adopted. Now, efforts are made to proclaim it as the International Day at the 70th General Assembly of United Nations (UN).

 

If "World National Parks and Protected Areas Day" is designated, the day will be conducive to marching toward a sustainable future where people can live harmonized with a nature.

 

To designate "World National Parks and Protected Areas Day", our consensus and your supports are required.

World National Parks and Protected Areas Day (20 February)
For a Sustainable Future: Harmony between People and a Nature

 

 History
 The 1st World Parks CEO’s Forum adopted 'Jeju Declaration on National Parks and Protected Areas' (Sept. 2012, Jeju)
    - 152 participants representing 96 organizations from 47 countries agreed to formally recommend the UN Secretariat declare a "UN National Parks and Protected Areas Day".
 CBD COP12 adopted the Decision (CBD COP 12. September 2014, Pyeongchang)
    - Decision (proposed by the Republic of Korea) was adopted to propose to declare 20 February as "World National Parks and Protected Areas Day" (UNEP/CBD/COP/DEC/XII/19) to UN General Assembly.
   ※ Feb. 20th: CBD PoWPA was accepted on Feb. 20th at CBD COP7.

 

 Importance of National Parks and Protected Areas
  National parks and Protected Areas play the critical roles as follows:

    Conservation of biodiversity and natural ecosystems; Adaptation to and mitigation climate change; Carbon storage; Conservation of oceans and freshwater; Eco-tourism and income increase from recreation; Job creation for local communities.

 

 Expected Effects of "World National Parks and Protected Areas Day"
 To promote researches and monitoring about National Parks and Protected Areas
 To provide more opportunities to people who want to experience natures through more chances related to ecotourism and recreations in

    National Parks
 To raise the awareness of international communities on the value and significant implications of National Parks and Protected Areas
 To share best practices and experiences about National Parks and Protected Areas
 To offer prizes to a manager/an expert who contribute to successful management of national parks and protected areas

 

 Future Tasks for "World National Parks and Protected Areas Day"
 To present the bill on 'World National Parks and Protected Areas Day' to the 70th UN General Assembly (September 2015) and to secure supporters
